Match Reports 28th February 2026
Wimbledon RFC 37 -CS Stags 1863 32
The Stags went across south west London to Wimbledon on Saturday, playing under dark, scattered clouds, on a boggy pitch. The start isn’t going to go down in the annals of club history, as Wimbledon scored before the first minute had been completed – their number eight finding himself in an open gap after a quickly taken tap and go, and running in unopposed to score just right of the posts for a converted try. 7-0 down from the off.
However, the Stags then scored next. First hooker Pantelis Stylianou touching down at the back of a maul, after a catch and drive at a five metre line out on 10 minutes. A converted penalty to Wimbledon on 15 minutes followed. And they then managed to score another converted try on 17 minutes to keep the lead – 17-5 the score. Stags added three more tries in the half though, first, fly half David Wilkinson finished off another pummelling of the Wimbledon line, and ran round flaying bodies to score on 21 minutes, converting himself in front of the posts. Ten minutes later Alex Edwards coming through at full back on a good line, touched down on 31 minutes on the right. And just before the half, winger Luke Trigg did exactly the same out on the left after another Stags attack. One would think four tries to two in the first half would amount to a decent lead for Stags, but Wimbledon kept plugging away at the posts every time they were awarded a penalty in range, and added 2 further penalties in the half on 23 and 38 minutes, taking them into half time with a 23-22 lead.
The match got bogged down in the middle for the first fifteen minutes of the second half. Then, Stags winger Luke Trigg backed up a length of the field attack with fast hands, to finish with an excellently powerful run through attempted tackles, and a try in the left corner on 53 minutes. Stags now lead 23-27. Only temporarily though, as Wimbledon struck back with another try through their full back on 55 minutes, which was converted. 30-27 the score. The ding-dong match continued, with Stags adding their sixth try on the 65-mnute mark, with winger Jack Gregson finishing off on the right, after coming close earlier. Unconverted, the score now stood 30-32 in Stags favour.
It did look like Stags had the upper hand now, and would finish off what looked like a tiring Wimbledon side. However, the frustration level arose after several further Stags attacks fell just short, or were penalised close to the line. Credit to Wimbledon, who seemed determined to redeem themselves after some disappointing early season results, and they kept at it close to the Stags line in the final minutes, going over for a converted try in the final play of the match to take the victory, 37-32. Stags 4 tries to 6 up, but it was the penalties taken and conversions by the home side that made the telling difference in the end.
Onwards and upwards Stags! The two bonus points (and Old Alleynians losing without a bonus) actually bring us up from fifth to fourth in the table, with 60 points for the season. Next week (Saturday 7th March) Stags take on fellow Kings House ground sharers London Scottish Lions in the league. Kick off 3 p.m. on the AGP pitch at Riverside Drive, Chiswick, W4 2SP. See you all there to support the team, and see if we can turn round the “away” defeat high flying Lions put on us earlier in the season!
Tries: 30 points (x6) –Pantelis Stylianou, David Wilkinson, Alex Edwards, Luke Trigg (x2), Jack Gegson.
Conversions: 2 points (x1) - David Wilkinson.
Penalty: Nil.
CS Staghounds 29 – Dorking II’s 48
CS Staghounds (II’s) took on Dorking II’s on the AGP at Chiswick RFC on Saturday, since there wasn’t a pitch available at Kings House. Credit to the team and coaches for arranging a requested 12.30 p.m. kick off. The Staghounds put up a gritty performance, especially matching a level higher Dorking side in open play. They went down 5 tries to 8, and ended the match with just thirteen men through injury. Thanks to all who made themselves available and gave their all for this stoic performance. We cannot include a Gaucho ROC London Shield league table, since the results have not been updated on the England Rugby website for a few weeks.
We are not sure about the scheduled Staghounds (2nd XV) away game for Saturday 7th March against neighbours Barnes II’s in the Gaucho ROC London Shield, as Barnes have intimated, they make not be able to make the game as scheduled. We shall advise you later this week on any update.
