Old Alleynians RFC 31 - CS Stags 1863 39
• Stags add another win
Playing on the beautiful settings next to Dulwich College, the CS Stags picked up another win away at Old Alleynians RFC.
Two quickfire tries on 13 and 14 minutes by James Fraser and Ikenna Obonna, one converted by David Wilkinson, saw Stags take a 12 point lead. Ikenna Obonna went over four minutes later for his second try, and converted by David Wilkinson, Stags now led 0-19. More Stags scores seemed inevitable as the boys relentlessly attacked the OA’s defence, but couldn’t quite get over the line. It was the OA’s who struck next though, a rapid counter attack at the end of the half securing a try and conversion, and the first points of the season against the Stags. Half time: Old Alleynians 7 – CS Stags 19.
The second half saw more of the same strong Stags attack, and strong running, with good back up support, saw the Stags run in 3 more tries through Jake Farnworth, Bertie Watson, and Ikenna Obonna (picking up his hat-trick). One of those was converted by David Wilkinson, and Stags were looking comfortable at 7-36. But not for long.
Credit to OA’s who seemed to pick up a second wind with the shower burst that went on overhead, and proceeded to hit back with three rapid tries on 61, 71, and 75 minutes, all converted by the OA’s Number 15. At 28-36, Stags had five minutes to hang on, and Alleynians had their tails up. A penalty award to OA’s saw their full back opt for the points in front of the posts, and bring the score to within a converted try, 31-36. But Stags managed to hold fast against OA’s camping on their line, and winning a held up, and a penalty, finally brought the game back into the Alleynians half for the final minute. A penalty award in front of the posts to Stags at the death, saw the boys take no chances with time, and David Wilkinson kicked the points to take the final score to 31-39.
Well done to the team for the commanding lead that was built up, and for grittingly hanging on at the end to the onslaught that Alleynians came at them with. Congratulations to Ikenna Obonna on his hat-trick tally.
Another 5 points in the bag, and that sees us at second in the table after two games.
Tries: 30 points (x5) - Ikenna Obonna (x3), James Fraser, Jake Farnworth, Bertie Watson.
Conversions: 6 points (x3) – David Wilkinson
Penalties: 3 points (x1) – David Wilkinson
