Camberley RFC 38 - CS Stags 1863 38

5 x 7 = 7 x 5. Plus, a penalty each! More fun in the mud!

The Stags travelled down to Camberley RFC on Saturday, and all credit to the home side for the early pitch inspection call, and for getting one of their four pitches play worthy on what was a very wet, preceding few days. A twenty minute heavy shower just before the match had the ground staff working even harder to ensure the pitch remained playable! Thanks to Shell Patrick as well, for providing her link to the photos she took and shares.

Both teams went hard at it for the first ten minutes, but it was Stags full back Alex Edwards who finished off a good attack and opened the scoring at 11 minutes, for his first try out right. The ding-dong continued with Camberley scoring at 15 minutes, and converting, and then Alex Edwards scoring his second try on 21 minutes. But then a determined Camberley pack stepped up their game, and converted a series of drives and mauls from close out to score three more tries on the 25, 30, and 35 minute marks. All were converted, and Stags found themselves 28-10 down at half time, with Camberley already getting their four try bonus.

Someone must have had a word with the Stags at half time, as they came out the traps like A1 grade greyhounds, and the plays and moves all gelled perfectly with precision and backing. Two more Stags tries were added within minutes of each other, through Ash Thomas at centre on 43 minutes, and winger Luke Trigg getting his first on 46 minutes, the back line combining well with good handling, back up, and well timed passes for both scores. Stags four try bonus also now secured. Fly half David Wilkinson could not convert, but a penalty opportunity in front of the posts was taken on the 55 minute mark to bring the score back to 28-23. Let the fun begin!

With Camberley now on the back foot, Stags continued their progressive drive forward. Once again, some good running in the very muddy conditions, and fine interchanges, saw our other winger Harry Parkes score out wide on 59 minutes. 28-28 now the score. Camberley were not done though, and came back with a try and conversion on 61 minutes. 35-28 to Camberley. But Stags hit back again with two quick tries – Alex Edwards grabbing his third try on 65 minutes, and Luke Trigg his second try on 71 minutes, both out on the left. Stags were now 35-38 up, and desperate to finish the game off. However, it was Camberley who grabbed a 72nd minute penalty to level the scores. Play was kept to middle pitch for the last few minutes, and with Camberley checking the time left with the referee, kicked out after their scrum for a 38-38 draw, 5 tries to 7.

All things said, a very entertaining match from the touch lines, with some fantastic running, tackling, co-ordinated attacks, and great tries, in what were difficult muddy conditions. Camberley converted all their 5 tries, whereas our boy ‘Wilko’ came close, but could not convert any of our 7 tries. (Let’s blame the slippery mud today, or that the opposition must have had a NASA designed super-tee or something!). But well done to all for a great game.

Special mentions: Firstly, our best wishes for a quick recovery to prop Josh Policarpio, who was carried off with a likely slipped disc – we all wish him well. Full back Alex Edwards found perfect placing for his hat-trick of tries today, and winger Luke Trigg likewise for his brace. Harry Parkes and the entire back line, with Alex Crocker at scrum half, also combined and covered each other very well today. The pack all did their very best in tough scrummaging, breakdown, and maul conditions, so all credit to them as well. Hope you all enjoy the great match photos, and as you can see, there was not much white showing on the Stags kit for most of the game, and the layers of caked mud on limbs bears testament to what a good match this was in the conditions prevailing!

Tries: 35 points (x7) – Alex Edwards (x3), Luke Trigg (x2), Ash Thomas, Harry Parkes.
Conversions: Nil
Penalty: 3 points (x1) – David Wilkinson.
